"Thanks Eric, do you use this unit unattended to fog a house? Do you find it effective for knocking down pests when used this way? "

Chemical Applicators for Small Greenhouses

I have a 3000 sq ft double poly gothic arch quonset style greenhouse. We start out clean each season but quickly get all sorts of bugs from all the plug suppliers: aphids, fungus gnats, shore flies, white flies. We mostly use beneficial insects for control, but every once in a while the pests win and we have to spray. We're certified organic, so we are extremely limited in what we can use. All the organic approved insecticides require direct contact with the targeted pest to be effective. The…See More

"I remember hand filling 45,000 4 1/2 inch pots for Geraniums. We cut open the peat bags and smashed them with a tractor bucket to bust them up then added perlite and sand. Next we would turn the pile over several times to mix then run it through a…"

Processing Compressed Bales

My little nursery is used to using loose fill potting mixes, but today we got a pallet of compressed 3.8 cu ft bales of potting mix in error. Given our schedule we are going to need to use it. How can we best prep these bales? We have a very basic house-made flat filler that can't fluff the mix for us. So we need to fluff and pre-moisten before use. Any tricks or tips I should know?  Worst case scenario we use an old bathtub, a shovel, and a digging fork. Any better ways? Should we cobble…See More

"Cease and Actinovate both carry OMRI labels and thus are pretty easy to get approval to use in an organic regulation. It would behoove the above poster to get his products OMRI listed if he wanted to make it easy for organic growers to consider…"

Paul Cross commented on Tim Hawk's blog post Advice on buying a used greenhouse
"I got my first greenhouse by buying and tearing down a used house. In hindsight I don't think it made a lot of sense, but it did get me in the business. My experience was that most of the mechanical systems were shot. So really I ended up with…"

"Most of the 5 gallon bubbler setups I've seen don't look like they would actually be able to make a good actively aerated compost tea (AACT). It takes a lot of air, much more than you would get from a basic aquarium pump and an air…"
