I just installed a new greenhouse inflation fan and it is making a horrendous howling noise.  I closed the intake to as small as it gets and it quiets it down quite a bit, but still the noise…Continue

Fertilizing Veggie & Herb Seedlings

I realize this is a pretty basic question, but I wondering what everyone else does for the best seedling.  I want the stocky 3 or 6 pack plant without outgrowing the cell.  How soon do you fertilize,…Continue

"Agreed that each plant takes an individual call.  Before tucking them away in the fall, I divide any perennials that have filled their pot.  Many just take a slice in half, and in my opinion pays for having to handle them at all. …"

"I've used marathon on them before for aphids with no bad effects. It works pretty well on mealybugs too. I'd hit them just as soon as I saw any growth or signs of problems. It usually works for about 3 months  "

"You can try corn gluten. It comes as a granule that you spread around. It inhibits root growth of the crabgrass seedlings so the timing of the application is important. It has about a 4 week control time. We sell it in our garden center for…"

"Some plants in the Sempervivum family produce a white spider like web on the foliage and it is natural. If it is more like a cottony white goo you might be talking about some type of mealy bug."

Treating overwintered plants for pests.

I have a succulent class later this spring, and want to begin taking cuttings from my over wintered plants.  Last spring we discovered insect activity on hens and chicks and some sedum as they came out of dormancy.  What is the best product to treat the "mother" plants with to make sure they are pest free?    My first thought is an insecticidal soap, or neem oil, but I only have one shot at this, and need to be sure.  Any thoughts?? See More
