I am making a total career change to Horticulture from the Medical and Public Health professions. My former career educational background includes a Masters of Public Health Degree, a Bachelors Degree, and Certificate of Medical Assistiing. I was a student of Horticulture at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City OR Spring of 2009, however I have had to suspend my Horticulture education in the Fall of 2009 for a while. I look forward to continuing it again as soon as I am able. I have been a hobby gardener for many years and when looking at a new career path, it was logical to go in this direction.

My coursework at Clackamas Community College included Plant ID, Greenhouse and Crop Production Bedding Plants, and Horticulture Practicum. In the Bedding Plants course and Horticulture Practicum students were responsible for taking a crop from start to finish. At the end of the term we sold the crops we grew at the Annual Plant Horticulture Department Plant Sale. The Horticulture Practicum course not only included crop production but learning about the various fields within the industry, including sustainability, golf course turf grasses and groundskeeping, small and equipment maintainence and use, as well as garden design and project management. Before I had to suspend my schooling shortly after the term began, I was taking Nursery Management and Plant Propagation.

Last summer,an a opportunity of a lifetime came my way as I was selected to recieve one of the Bruce Briggs Memorial Scholarships that allowed me to attend the Western Region International Plant Propagators Society Conference in San Diego in October. I felt so fortunate as I am just starting out in the field, the other scholarhip recipents were recent graduates or advanced students of horticulture at several major Universities. It an awesome experience and great to listen to and discuss plants, the business, and challenges, with some of the industry's leading propagators, horticulturists, and veterans of the field. I learned so much attending the conference; it solidified my resolve to be come a member of the horticulture industry. As I explained in my prepared personal statement for the scholarship and the when talking with attendees at the conference, I am though leaning towards propagation and growing, I am not sure exactly where I belong or will end up in the industry or if I will have my own greenhouse or propagation house, I just know that I will be in the industry somewhere.

All I need is someone to take a chance on me and help me get started. I want to learn the industry from the ground up. I am a a quick learner, what I lack in experience I make up in drive and determination and am still planning to move ahead with my schooling soon. I will relocate if necessary.

Thanks for your interest and attention

My reason for this note is to pass along what, at the moment, might be a rare opportunity. Our Nursery Sales Manager is moving to the Seattle area to be nearer to his family. This opens up an opportunity for an aspiring candidate with passion, interest and talent in retail nursery management. I suspect there might be few opportunities as promising as this current one, especially in the current marketplace.

Roger's Gardens is one of the three or four busiest and best known garden centers in the nation and an industry leader. This is a rare foot in the door for a rising star somewhere out there.

Interested candidates should email me with their resume offline at ronv@rogersgardens.com.

I want to be very respectful of my fellow nursery retailers and do not wish to tamper with any staff who are happily employed.

People contact us often regarding positions they're trying to fill. We thought it would be good to have an obvious place to post job opportunities. Even if you're not looking for yourself, you might know someone who fits the bill.
