I have been growing for 13 year and have always had problems with mice getting in our seed trays. So this past season I decided to use a simple trick used by the Amish to keep mice out of there house. (i grew up in Amish country)
I took an unopened box of moth balls and poked some holes in the top of the box then place it on the floor by our seed rack. No more MICE!!

Before there were chemical options the Amish probably used a more natural approach.

The bags are filled with mint oil. The mice hate the mint smell. Each packet lasts for about 30 days. How many to use would depend on the air movement in the greenhouse and the size of the structure. For an enclosed area, each will do about a 10 x 10 area.
Permalink Reply by Kris Mattie on September 30, 2012 at 9:16am Thanks Timothy! I believe we might sell this product in our garden center, I'll have to try it now that the mice will be rushing in to keep warm for the winter. :( Do you know if it is effective in an localized area?

Permalink Reply by Timothy Lamprey on September 30, 2012 at 9:28am We sell propane and the mice always build nests under the scale. We place 1 pack under the scale and it keeps them away for a month. We have also used it near the bird seed stored in the warehouse. Keeps them away from the seed.

I've found that fabric softener sheets from the dollar store work well too.
